25 Reasons LinkedIn Doesn't Work

I read somewhere recently that LinkedIn is the "Big Daddy" of social media for business. If that's true, I wonder why so many business people and companies fail to get much benefit from LinkedIn. After all, there are about 170 million users with one or two new users being added every second. It seems like it would be a no brainer.

Unfortunately, I've talked with people who say LinkedIn just doesn't work...for them. When they say that, I often ask something like, when was the last time you updated your status? Typically they answer that it's been quite awhile since they've updated their status or that they don't update it on a regular basis.

So, I thought I'd offer some reasons that LinkedIn doesn't work. Here's a hint: it's not because of LinkedIn.

  1. You don't have a recognizable profile picture
  2. You have multiple profiles--probably because it had been so long since you logged in you forgot the password to your profile and had to create a new one!
  3. You haven't optimized your profile url so it is easy to share
  4. You don't have a complete profile--100%
  5. You don't update your status on a regular basis
  6. You don't "like," comment or share your connection's status updates
  7. You use your status update like it's an advertisement for you or your services
  8. You don't log into your account on a daily basis
  9. You haven't optimized your profile for search
  10. You haven't added any plug-ins to your profile
  11. You don't monitor your profile to see who has viewed it
  12. You don't recommend other people
  13. You don't endorse the skills and experience of your connections
  14. You don't post relevant discussions to groups
  15. You self promote in groups
  16. You don't respond to posts in groups
  17. You don't answer questions in the Answers section of LinkedIn
  18. You send generic connection requests to people you don't know
  19. You haven't set up a company page
  20. Your company page is incomplete
  21. You don't update the status for your company page on a regular basis
  22. You don't follow any companies
  23. You don't have a LinkedIn button on your blog or website
  24. You don't use LinkedIn Signal to sort your news feed for important or relevant updates
  25. You don't post your events on LinkedIn

That's my 2 cents. What do you think? Do you have any other reasons LinkedIn doesn't work? I'd love to hear them.
